Can Naturopathy Treat Hair Loss?

Hair loss can be a distressing and challenging condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. While there are various conventional treatments available, an increasing number of people are turning to naturopathy for a more holistic and natural approach to address the root causes of hair loss.

Understanding The Causes

Before delving into naturopathic remedies, it is crucial to understand the potential causes of hair loss. Factors such as genetics, hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, stress, and environmental factors can contribute to hair thinning and baldness. Naturopathy focuses on identifying and addressing these underlying causes rather than merely treating the symptoms.

Naturopathic Approaches to Hair Loss

Herbal Treatment

Glycyrrhizin - a compound in liquorice root, along with peony, have been shown to improve mild to moderate alopecia in adults and severe alopecia in children.

In a 2013 research study, 117 participants were randomly assigned to receive either Total glucosides of paeony capsules (TGPC) and compound glycyrrhizin tablets (CGT), or CGT alone, over a 12-month period. Throughout the study, the severity of alopecia areata, the effective rate, and any adverse events were recorded at the 3rd, 6th, and 12th month as evaluation points. Both groups exhibited a significant reduction in alopecia areata severity levels, with the treatment groups consistently achieving lower scores compared to the control groups.

Nutraceuticals

Lysine, an essential amino acid, is believed to contribute to the reduction of hair loss through several mechanisms. Firstly, lysine aids in the absorption of iron, an essential mineral for maintaining healthy hair growth. It is also thought to inhibit the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme associated with the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss. By modulating hormonal levels and supporting fundamental aspects of hair structure and growth, lysine may contribute to the prevention or reduction of hair loss.

Dietary Interventions

A well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet is fundamental for healthy hair. Diets high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are needed to nourish hair follicles and encourage regrowth. Essential nutrients such as zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in treating and preventing hair loss. These nutritional targets can effortlessly be reached by incorporating a variety of plant foods, such as vegetables, fruits, wholegrains and legumes.

Stress Management

High levels of stress can lead to an increased production of cortisol, a hormone associated with the "fight or flight" response. Elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the normal functioning of hair follicles, leading to hair thinning and shedding. Additionally, stress can contribute to hormonal imbalances, such as an increase in androgens, which are linked to hair loss. Effective stress management techniques, such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and regular physical activity, help reduce cortisol levels and promote hormonal balance. By mitigating the impact of stress on the body, these practices create a more favourable environment for healthy hair growth.
